2023-24 Program Options

Training Session Options
Training sessions are assigned by age group, which are specified in the next section. When selecting a program option during the registration process, athletes and their families are committing to their selected schedule for the entire season. Changes may be made only through discussion with an athlete’s parents/guardians, their coach/es, and the Program Director.

The available training sessions are as follows:

  • Saturday - full day at Brighton Resort (9:00-3:00)

  • Sunday - full day at Brighton Resort (9:00-3:00)

  • Tuesday - evening session at Brighton Resort (U10 & U12) or Utah Olympic Park (U12 with coach permission, U14 & U16)

  • Thursday - evening session at Utah Olympic Park (U10 with coach permission, U12+)

  • Friday - evening session at Utah Olympic Park (U12 with coach permission, U14+)

Utah Olympic Park (UOP) training session times have not yet been published for the 2023-24 season. These sessions are in the evening and will last approximately two hours. Historically, our time slots have started around 6:00 pm. This note will be updated when UOP shares their schedule for the coming year with local teams.

Please note that regular training at UOP requires the purchase of a season pass for that venue ($475). Training sessions with age group limitations may have exceptions depending on an athlete’s level of experience and skill.

How do I know what age group my athlete belongs to?

An athlete’s age group is determined by how old they will be on December 31st of a given season. Here’s the cheat sheet! The list below shows what age group an athlete should be in for the 23-24 season given that they will be the age shown on 12/31/23:

  • 5 years old - Fast 5’s

  • 6-7 years old - U8

  • 8-9 years old - U10

  • 10-11 years old - U12

  • 12-13 years old - U14

  • 14-15 years old - U16

FAST 5’s

IMG_5482.jpg

FAST 5’s is our introduction to racing program meant for skiers who will be racing on the U8 team next year. This is not a learn-to-ski program, and previous skiing experience is required as these little racers need to be able to run the entire mountain. The FAST 5's program will focus on the skills of skiing and technical fundamentals, including balance and stance through directed free skiing. These athletes will learn basic race fundamentals along with skiing safety and proper mountain etiquette. The program includes all-mountain skiing and an introduction to gate training and ski racing. While the FAST 5’s cannot race, they can forerun if we feel conditions are appropriate, and we will also have them racing the ski school races, as well as at our family fun ski day at the conclusion of the season. The FAST 5’s will not have training on a day of a YSL race. All athletes must have an Alpine Youth USSS membership and a seasons pass to Brighton Resort. The FAST 5’s is a team for really advanced 5 year olds that need more support than ski school to advance their skills and get them ready for racing and more fun on the mountain.

Youth Ski League (YSL)

U8’s

U8’s

U10’s

U10’s

Open for U8s – U12s. This training option will focus on the skills of skiing and ski racing, while continuing to build the technical fundamental skills needed to succeed. The coaches will use USSS’s SkillsQuest program to measure and encourage the athletes to continue to work on balance, stance, edge pressure, etc. Our YSL team will train both on Saturdays and Tuesday nights, under the lights at Brighton, and will compete at all of the YSL races during the season. Please note that U8s may only train on Tuesday nights if accompanied by a parent/guardian while on the mountain. The YSL team members may decide to try a fun South Series at the end of the season with coach’s recommendation. All athletes are encouraged to attend fall dryland training to get ready for the upcoming season, unless they are involved in other sports and staying fit and flexible.

South Series

U12’s

U12’s

This option is open to U10s-U14s and continues our focus on the skills and fundamentals of skiing and ski racing. U10s may only join the South Series teams by invitation only from the Program Director. This team will increase their time on snow, training hard for the longer, more technical courses of the South Series race calendar. Races are two-day events, and there are six qualifiers throughout the season for the Intermountain Championships for the U10 and U12 age group. Racers who do not qualify for Championships may participate in Finals instead. South Series racers will train on a three or four day training schedule. This is the perfect team for new U14 racers, or those that need a little more training before making the jump to the more competitive IMD series. All athletes are encouraged to attend fall dryland training to get ready for the upcoming season, unless they are involved in other sports and staying fit and flexible.

IMD U14/U16

U14’s

U14’s

Available to U14 and U16 athletes. Athletes have training plans ranging from 2-5 days plans as identified above. This group has the option to attend IMD U14 and U16 qualifiers and open series races. These races are typically longer, more consecutive days, on more challenging terrain, and often involve more intensive travel. Less experienced U14 & U16 athletes may also choose to attend South Series events, though those events will not contribute to championship races at the end of the season. U14 athletes who participate in their qualifiers may earn a spot in the Tri-Divisional Championships event. All athletes are encouraged to attend fall dryland training to get ready for the upcoming season, unless they are involved in other sports and staying fit and flexible.
